When Should You File for Work Permit Renewal? USCIS usually issues an EAD with a one-year or two-year validity period. You can file for the renewal any time starting from four months before the expiration of the current work permit. Determine your EAD’s expiration date by checking the front of the card.

Since your lawful permanent resident status is not linked to your green card’s validity, you won’t be deported simply because your green card has expired. You will only lose your lawful permanent residency status if you abandon your status or become a U.S. citizen.
