How To Use Chopsticks – Chinese Chopsticks.

Chopsticks are slender sticks about 20 to 25 centimeters long. The upper half of the stick is often squared. This makes it easier to grasp and prevents it from rolling over, the lower half is usually rounded.

Chopsticks are shaped pairs of equal-length sticks that have been used as the traditional ancient kitchen and eating utensils in virtually all of East Asia for over 6000 years.

It was first used by the Chinese, use of the chopsticks later spread to other countries either through cultural influence or through Chinese immigrant communities, such as Taiwan, Nepal, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, Philippines, Laos, Vietnam, Korea, even Thailand inclusive, as well as California, Hawaii, and all other cities all around the globe with Chinese communities.

Chopsticks are smoothed and frequently tapered and are commonly made of bamboo, plastic, wood, or stainless steel. They are less commonly made from titanium, gold, silver, porcelain, jade, or ivory.

Chopsticks are held in the dominant hand, between the thumb and fingers, and used to pick up pieces of food.
Many visitors of oriental countries such as China and Japan are fascinated when they see a small child eating with a pair of seemingly over-sizes chopsticks, it really looks easy.

1: Chopsticks are held in one hand only, usually the right hand;

2: Cup your hand, with your thumb apart from your fingers. Balance it on your ring finger.

3: Place the second chopstick in the valley between your pointer finger and thumb along with the first chopstick, but rest this one on your middle finger instead of your ring finger.

4: Use your thumb, pointer and middle fingers to grasp the second chopstick a bit more tightly.

5: Practice until you can bring the tips of the chop sticks together easily.

You are now ready to use these versatile implements to pick up any of the delicious morsels served in a Chinese meal- from a single grain of rice to a quail’s egg!
