The South African Army is the army of South Africa, it was first formed after the Union of South Africa was created in 1910. The South African military evolved within the tradition of frontier warfare fought by Boer Commando (militia) forces, reinforced by the Afrikaners’ historical distrust of large standing armies.

South African Army Application Form Requirements 2021/2022.

• SA Army will only open the application portal only on the availability of a vacant position.
• Interested applicants will have to undergo the prescribed SANDF military health examination to know if you are medically fit.
• The successful completion of psychometric tests and appearance before a selection board only when it is necessary for certain appointments, eg, officer’s appointments. Be guided that this will not be applicable for ex-regular members.

SA Army Selection Process.

• Applicants that have to undergo the minimum requirements listed above will be subjected to further screening.
• Applicants identified will, therefore, be invited to partake in a selection process.

The selection process entails the following:

Psychometric evaluation:

The aim is to assess the candidate’s aptitude and potential to develop in the position that was applied for.

The nature of these tests will depend on the position applied for.

Selection Board (formal interview):

A Selection Board will be conducted in order to assess the applicant’s interest in the position applied for, as well as his or her interest in the Defence Force in general.

The interview will also focus on self- confidence, leadership potential and communication skills.

Medical Evaluation:

A comprehensive medical evaluation will be conducted by appointed military medical practitioners in order to assess the applicant’s medical history and current medical status.

All applicants must be declared fit for military training before commencement.

Criminal Records:

Fingerprints of applicants will be sent to the Criminal Record Bureau for verification.

Records of convictions will be evaluated based on the severity thereof and how recently the offence(s) occurred.

Offer of Employment.

• Successful applicants will receive an offer of employment.
• Candidates who are not successful will be informed by correspondence.

It is unfortunate that not all applicants who are recommended for training will receive an offer of employment due to a large number of applications received.

How to Join the South African Army.

If you are interested in the SA Army and you wish to join them, you can do so. it is not really a big deal. All you need to do is to go to the official website and fill the online application form and wait for a notice from them to see if you have been offered employment. Successful candidates will receive a notice from the SA Army if they have been offered a job. So ensure to always check your email and SMS alert to see if you have any message from the South African Army. Note that, not all candidates that applied for this job will be offered employment.

Whether for updating or new application the following must be submitted:

• Original Military Veterans Database Form dated and signed
• Certified copies (not older than 3 months) of:
  • Applicant ID Document (If applicant is deceased, his death certificate)
  • Spouse ID Document
  • Marriage Certificate (As per the regulations: “spouse” means a person who is the spouse or partner of a military veteran in accordance with the Marriage Act, 1961 (Act No. 25 of 1961), the Recognition of Customary Marriages Act, 1998 (Act No. 120 of 1998), or the Civil Union Act, 2006 (Act No. 17 of 2006), or the tenets of any Asiatic religion, and “spousal relationship” has a corresponding meaning;)
  • Cohabitation Agreement notarised by an Attorney registered with the Law Society of South Africa.
  • Children’s Unabridged Birth Certificates containing both parents’ full details. (Even for children above 18-ID Holders)
  • If it is the military veteran’s children but their surnames differ submit Unabridged Birth Certificate containing both parents’ full details or the DNA results
  • If member deceased and never married but had and child out of wedlock submit Unabridged Birth Certificate containing both parents’ full details or the DNA results
  • If the children are not the member’s biological children but they are under his/her care they need to submit a Guardianship Confirmation or Adoption Order from court.
  • Proof of dependence for children older than 18 years (i.e. confirmation of full time studies) if child is disabled and cannot study or work, confirmation of disability by a registered Healthcare Practitioner.
  • Drivers licence
  • Proof of Residence
  • Educational qualifications
  • Proof of registration and tax clearance certificate if veteran has a business
• NB: No cellphone image copies will be accepted. Ensure your copies are clear and can be read.
