Samsung Chief Lee Indicted On Bribery Charges – The acting head of Samsung has been indicted on bribery and embezzlement charges connected to a corruption and cronyism scandal centring on South Korea’s impeached president, Park Geun-hye.

Lee Jae-yong and four other Samsung executives will almost certainly face trial over accusations that South Korea’s biggest conglomerate donated millions of dollars to foundations run by a close friend of Park’s in exchange for government favors.

In what poses to be a big blow to the world’s biggest smartphone maker, South Korean prosecutors have said Samsung Group chief, Jay Y. Lee and four other executives will be charged with bribery and embezzlement.

The four executives, who all face the same charges as Lee except perjury, are the Samsung group’s vice-chairman, Choi Gee-sung, and president, Chang Choong-ki, as well as Samsung Electronics’ president, Park Sang-jin, and executive vice-president, Hwang Sung-soo.

Lee was arrested on Friday, February 17, 2017,  over his alleged role in the corruption scandal involving impeached President Park Geun-hye of South Korea.
In a statement released by Lee Kyu-chul, a spokesman for the special prosecutor, he said:

‘The five executives will face charges including bribery, embezzlement and hiding assets overseas.’

‘Lee will also be charged with committing perjury before parliament.

‘The executives to be charged are Samsung Group vice chairman Choi Gee-sung, president Chang Choong-ki and Samsung Electronics president Park Sang-jin and executive vice president Hwang Sung-soo,’ the spokesman said.

The prosecutor’s office will make an official announcement regarding the conclusion of its investigation on Monday, March 6, 2017.
